CONN-NAHRO hosts a scholarship for graduating high school and continuing college students who reside in Connecticut public housing or Section 8 housing through a CONN-NAHRO member agency. The 2018 Scholarship application has been posted under The Latest News on the front page of our website with an application deadline in June 8, 2018. Refer to the application for specific details and download the application NOW so you know what is needed for you to complete an application.

MISSION:
The mission of the Conn NAHRO Scholarship Committee is to aid persons living in Conn NAHRO member sponsored communities to attain higher education.
CONN-NAHRO JOHN J. KELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
NOTICE TO CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND
CURRENT UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE STUDENTS
CONN-NAHRO AWARDS THREE (3) $3,500 SCHOLARSHIPS EACH YEAR to help students living in CONN-NAHRO member sponsored communities who, without this assistance, would not be able to pursue their goal of higher education.  The Scholarship will be administered by a committee appointed by CONN-NAHRO's board of directors.
Who Is Eligible To Apply?
1. All persons who have been accepted into a two (2) or four (4) year institution of higher learning working toward a full-time Associate or Bachelor Degree beginning in September, 2018, and 
2. Who reside in or are assisted with their housing by a CONN-NAHRO agency member, and 
3. Who are residents in good standing. 
When Can I Apply?
Applications will be available on the CONN-NAHRO website and will be mailed to member agencies at the end of May of 2018.
When Is My Application Due?
The application deadline will be announced but it is usually due the first or second week of June.
What can I do to prepare ahead of time?   You can download and look at last year's application; it is likely to look very much the same. Some suggestions are to identify and request your recommendation letters early, request your letters of recommendation early, and think about your essay.

2017 Scholarship Winners

Stacy-Ann Wallen: City of Hartford (Imagineers)

Stacy-Ann is attending the University of Connecticut, where she is studying Nursing. She has an overall grade point average of 3.634. Stacy-Ann is well-spoken, dedicated, and a disciplined student. In addition to Ms. Wallen’s academic and scholastic achievements, she cares deeply for society and her community. She facilitated and organized several campus events to promote understanding and dialogue on campus. Her unique ability to combine intellectual gifts with compassion represents the best of what it means to be a scholar, professional, and global citizen.


Joseph Bairaktaris Jr.: Westport Housing Authority

Joseph “Joey” is attending Johnson and Wales University where his area of study is Criminal Justice. Joey has served with the Fairfield Connecticut Police Explorer program faithfully for 6 years and has learned the principals of Law Enforcement and how it relates to government and strong communities. Joey’s goal is to become a Police Officer and stabilize communities. He gets along well with everyone and has a sincere concern for others. Being a triplet has helped him become hardworking, motivated, dependable, and respectful. Joey always exhibits role model behavior and a polite, pleasant manner.

Chandler O’Reardon: Westport Housing Authority

Chandler is attending Bard College in the fall, she is currently undecided in her area of study but Psychology, Mathematics or French studies sparks her interest. Her overall grade point average at Staples High School in Westport was 3.94. She was awarded a full scholarship last summer to attend Oxford University in England, while there she studied math, architecture, and chemistry. She manages her life and grades with maturity and grace. In addition, to her educational high standards she is a classical guitarist and a competitive gymnast. She was the all-around gymnastics winner all four years at high school and named scholar/athlete of the year. Chandler’s positive outlook, self-motivation, and never quit attitude truly demonstrates this well rounded young lady.


Lauren Oakes: Department of Housing (J. D’Amelia & Associates)

Lauren will be attending Hartwick College, concentrating in Pre-Medical and Biological Sciences. Lauren, her four siblings, and her father participant in the S8 VASH program and have not had it easy. While enduring life’s tough challenges, Lauren never complained or expected special treatment. In fact, she managed home and school in a respectful and dignified way. She is motivated to learn, always searching for new ideas, and knowledge. Lauren’s academic passions lie within the sciences, where she engaged in genetics, physics, and science research courses. She volunteers countless hours at the Boys and Girls Club, is a member of the marching band, and won multiple medals in Track & Field. Lauren displays leadership, work ethic, and perseverance in all she does.
